Just Enough, Just in Time (Finley Part 2)

I’ve had so many thoughts and conversations since that day on the Finley River, some 40 years ago. If you haven’t read the story yet, click here.

In the moment we realized we were okay, relief followed fear and peace followed panic.

In the hours and days that followed, I was thankful to be alive and unharmed. It took some time to process and draw conclusions about that experience.  It’s not a story that follows, but rather groupings of thought.

Stating the OBVIOUS:

Stating the NOT SO OBVIOUS:

It has been my experience that He intervenes when we ask and sometimes even when we don’t.  Sometimes He intervenes without our knowledge and only later we become aware.

When we asked Him for help on the Finley River road, He sent angels (in human form) to save us from a disastrous situation.

The angels/people were present to save us just seconds before we needed it. They also left us without notice as soon as we no longer needed their aid. Just enough. Just in time.

The answer was either going to be a heavenly, supernatural intervention or we would face an outcome I never allow myself to imagine.

Those ways included:

  1. No one got hurt.
  2. The grandfather and grandson were moved by the miracle.
  3. The four men may have encountered God that day themselves, and possibly experienced a directional shift that put their lives on a very different trajectory.
  4. We were forever changed.
  5. We became more aware of our surroundings, daily decisions, and of how God can intervene in an instant.
  6. Further, we became more aware, without understanding or a language for it at the time, of “kairos moments”.  One definition of “kairos” is “a propitious moment for decision or action.” We needed an exact action in that moment.

We have a fuller understanding of these verses repeated throughout scripture:

  1. “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.” Zephaniah 3:17
  2. “And everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be delivered.” Joel 2:32
  3. “And everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” Acts 2:21
  4. “Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13

There was no time for us to form a committee to contemplate and vote on whether this was something for which we should ask God’s help. There was no time to analyze whether this was too big and too impossible for God’s ability or willingness. There was no time to analyze whether this was too small and too insignificant for God’s attention or interest. It was just a simple, child-like cry for HELP!!!!!

When we understand our identity in Him, we know that when we make requests that are within the realm of daughter (or son) to Father, His answer is always YES!!! He moved heaven and Earth to bring the answer in the instant we needed it. Just a few seconds later would have been too late. He is always right on time.

He wants to partner with us in the ordinary, the extraordinary, and the dire situations.

His intervention in our lives comes when we invite him into any situation. He wants to partner with us in the ordinary, the extraordinary, and the dire situations. It may be that we only invite Him into situations when we realize we are “up a creek without a paddle.”

It may be that we only invite Him into situations when we realize that without Him, whatever we want/need __________________ (you fill in the blank) will fail. But, He wants to be with us in all our circumstances.

He will not be stopped by a river, a swamp, a fence, a gate, a long dirt road, by distance, by time of day or night, by our age, gender, socioeconomic status, or by four men.

If He can find me on the Finley River, he can find me anywhere. If He can rescue me on the Finley River, He can rescue me in any situation.

I understood I am able to reach Him and He me. I understood more of His love as a Father that day -- as protector, as provider. He’s still revealing things to me through this experience from 40 years ago and I’m still drawing on those revelations. Every time I’m faced with something that seems absolutely impossible to overcome, I just remember that if He can rescue me in a deserted back woods area, He can do absolutely anything! He can command angels to go to work on my behalf instantaneously. Just enough. Just in time.

There is more than enough for everyone, because He is more than enough.

While knowing I have help in the dire situations is wonderful, more life-changing has been my continually developing understanding of my identity in Him. My level of trust in Him is always increasing. He really just wants relationship with us. I can trust that. Further, I can trust that He really does want to partner with me in the everyday ordinary decisions of life. He is all about being in the mundane moments of our day. He wants to do life together. He wants me to give away everything He has given me. And He will just keep giving. There is more than enough for everyone, because He is more than enough.

Posting on this Easter Sunday morning, 2017, I have never been more fully aware that I live, unharmed by that situation so many years ago, because He lives. He paid the full price for my protection and provision that day and every day before or since. Thank you Father! Thank you Jesus!

Finley River

It was the summer of 1975 and my best friend Vickie and I had just turned 16. Vickie invited me to come to Lindenlure, a popular swimming area on the Finley River situated between Ozark, Sparta and Rogersville, Missouri. Vickie’s mom, Nora, drove us along with Vickie’s sister Elaine, to the river just 20 minutes from our hometown of Springfield. Lindenlure Lake dams up the Finley River but then pours over the edge with varying flow volume depending on current water levels, creating a cascading 8-ft waterfall from river’s edge to river’s edge. From the waterfall, the river flows below the Highway 125 bridge and continues downstream beside several hundred feet of some of the best “beach” a river can tout.

The Vision I Can't Unsee

If you’ve read Meredith’s 13-part Journey, you’ve no doubt picked up on some of our life adventures. However, it’s imperative I write about the journey from my perspective as well. But, where to start? Present moment? Okay. It’s 12/30/16 as I’m writing this, and now 1/1/17 as I’m posting. I’m "loaded for BEAR!"

Loaded For Bear

“Loaded for Bear” is a loaded phrase. I used it in my 1/1/17 blog post “The Vision I can’t Unsee.” It needs a bit of unpacking. While I’ve never encountered a bear up close and certainly don’t want to, I have had many outdoor experiences where the potential was present.
