The brightest, most memorable Christmas holidays for me took place in the early 1990’s while we were stationed in Germany with the US Army. Siegelbach, our destination village, is situated some 90 miles southwest of Frankfurt and within a brief thirty-minute drive down the Autobahn into Luxembourg and France.
If you’ve read Meredith’s 13-part Journey, you’ve no doubt picked up on some of our life adventures. However, it’s imperative I write about the journey from my perspective as well. But, where to start? Present moment? Okay. It’s 12/30/16 as I’m writing this, and now 1/1/17 as I’m posting. I’m "loaded for BEAR!"
As Christmas neared this year, we pulled out the one and only box of decorations we had left, and wondered whether to even bother opening it. Earlier this year, in preparation to eventually downsize from our home, we sold every single last bit of decorations that we had used to cover the 6700 square feet of venue space these last seven years.
At the turn of the 19th century, Union Station was the world’s largest and busiest train station. As you walk inside from the front entrance, you’re greeted by a double-sided staircase, leading to the floor of the Grand Hall. This is likely, hands down, one of the most ornate hotel entrances you’ll ever experienced, so just don’t trip while you’re looking up. The intricate, massive ceiling of the Grand Hall in St. Louis’s famous Union Station, was once the pinnacle of opulence. Built in 1894, it speaks of the grandeur of an era passed.
Washington Avenue Historic District has many restaurants, but only one of them is Peruvian. Mango has a sharp edge to it. Clean, crisp, white linens greet guests at each table, the high ceilings say “grandeur,” the warm colors and art say “style and heritage.” It’s the only Peruvian restaurant in the city, so there’s truly nothing else like it.

With rumors of one of the most exclusive rooftops in the city, along with a name that’s drawing curious visitors, the LondonHouse wins in every way in terms of “vibrant space.” LondonHouse Chicago, a luxury riverfront hotel, is accomplishing something that’s extremely hard to do. It’s a large hotel, that has curated a completely boutique feel. Finished this past Spring, 2016, every single detail continues a pattern that exudes chic and cozy.
Although our small family comes to our house every year for Thanksgiving, we really don’t cook for them; we cook for us. Like I’ve said, my mother doesn’t spend much time in the kitchen except around the holidays. And by “holidays” I mean just one in particular--Thanksgiving.
Watching a business materialize from just a seed of an idea, learning to be an employee, learning hospitality, learning to view space differently, teaching myself about food, and the two of us traveling so much, brought us to an intersecting point in time. We had to choose between building our new vision or continuing to build Tuscan Hill.
